Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a crucial airport in California and the United States. One of the busiest in the world and located in the nation's second-most populated city, LAX connects passengers to destinations near and far. Several American carriers have hubs and bases at LAX, and Southwest Airlines has a massive inter-California network.

The shortest route from Los Angeles International Airport is a mere 89 miles. United Airlines offers nonstop service to Santa Barbara on the Embraer E175. Santa Barbara is a small coastal town north of Los Angeles and a popular leisure destination year-round. Though small, Santa Barbara is connected to ten cities via nonstop flights.

At number two is Los Angeles International Airport - San Diego International Airport. The 109-mile route is serviced by Delta Air Lines and United several times daily. United deploys various aircraft on the route, like the Boeing 737 MAX 9, 737-800, 737-900, Airbus A320, and Embraer E175. SkyWest operates the LAX-SAN route for Delta using its fleet of E175s.

The next route on the list is another inter-California route served by United Airlines. The flight from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles is 155 miles and a regional route for United, which sees service from the E175s and the Bombardier CRJ-700s. Number four is a route to the 'armpit' of California, as many like to call Fresno. The CRJ-700 operates the once-daily, 209-mile service.

The fifth-shortest route is extremely popular, proven by the number of airlines operating the route and the number of flights. The Los Angeles - Las Vegas route, which is just 236 miles, sees service from United, Delta, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Southwest, and JetBlue. Southwest has the largest market share on the route by a long shot.

At number six is the Los Angeles - San Jose route, served by four airlines. Though Southwest, American, Delta, and Alaska compete on this route, Southwest has the largest market share, with 176 of the 240 flights in August. Delta is not far behind Southwest with 150 flights, and then there is a significant drop to Alaska's 89 and American's 30 flights.

The seventh-shortest route connects California's two largest cities, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Both are hubs for United and Alaska, but four other carriers also fly the 337-mile route.

Across the San Francisco Bay, three airlines compete on the LAX-Oakland route, which also covers 337 miles. In the East Bay, Southwest also dominates the market, with 274 flights compared to Delta's 89 and Spirit's 31.

United is the lone wolf on #8, flying daily to Prescott, Arizona. A fleet of Bombardier CRJ-200s operates the 346-mile route. Number nine is Prescott's neighbor, Phoenix. Four airlines compete on the 370-mile route to the Arizona capital, and Southwest has the largest market share. Rounding out the top ten is the 373-mile route to the California capital, Sacramento. Just like the LAX-PHX route, Southwest dominates the market to Sacramento.
