The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Volaris has embraced the realm of Non-Fungible Tokens (or NFTs). On Monday, the company introduced its own collection of NFTs, each a distinctive digital piece that doubles as a collective. It includes a one-of-a-kind Annual Pass membership, allowing the owner to travel to any destination within the Volaris route map.

Introducing the NFTs

Some airlines globally have cautiously entered the NFT world in the last few years. For instance, All Nippon Airways, airBaltic, Qantas, and Etihad Airways have launched an NFT business, with the Japanese carrier being the last one.

An NFT is a technology that expresses ownership of digital assets. It is recorded on a blockchain and has mainly been used in the fields of arts and music. Volaris has announced the launch of the first NFT in the Mexican aviation industry, which will coincide with the release of its latest product: the Volaris Annual Pass.

As explained by the Mexican ultra-low-cost company, the initial edition of the Volaris Annual Pass collection consists of 10 unique NFT designs, paying tribute to some of the company's most iconic destinations (such as Cancun, Bogota, Tijuana, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Peru).

These limited-edition digital pieces will be made available for purchase on the opensea.io platform, offering enthusiasts the chance to acquire a piece of aviation history that comes bundled with a year-long travel privilege. Volaris’ Annual Pass is an all-you-can-fly subscription that will allow passengers to enjoy one-way flights on all the company’s network, including international destinations. The regular price for the Annual Pass is $460 and has been introduced this month.

How to acquire Volaris’ NFTs?

Volaris will have 30 NFT pieces available for purchase. The airline began selling them on Monday. They can be bought on the opensea.io platform at a special pre-sale price. Daniel Gelemovich, Director of Marketing and Digital at Volaris, said in a statement,

“We are thrilled to be the first airline in Mexico to venture into the exciting world of NFTs and to delve into Web 3.0. By adopting cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, we are committed to offering unique travel experiences that continue to elevate innovation and customer service standards. We are excited to take our passengers to new heights in this thrilling digital era.”

The first 20 individuals to acquire one of the company’s NFTs will receive a welcome kit with access to unique experiences.

How does Volaris’ Annual Pass work?

The airline’s new Annual Pass is similar to the one offered by its partner Frontier Airlines in the United States. It is a product that serves digital nomads and people who like to travel on short notice. As such, passengers with an Annual Pass can acquire a boarding pass for any domestic destination one day in advance and for any international destination three days in advance. Volaris releases a limited amount of seats for Annual Pass holders on each flight. Additionally, passengers with the Annual Pass have to pay taxes, chargers, and ancillary products.
