Summary

  • JetSMART and American Airlines have expanded their codeshare agreement to include Peru.
  • JetSMART is looking to join American Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program, which will enable passengers to accumulate miles and redeem rewards on domestic and international flights.

In a significant development, the alliance between JetSMART and American Airlines has achieved a major milestone with the inclusion of Peru in their codeshare agreement. This strategic partnership has taken another leap forward, expanding its reach beyond Chile and the United States to now encompass Peru.

A growing network: codeshare expansion

This week, JetSMART announced it has added Peru to its codeshare agreement with American Airlines. Therefore, passengers can now buy tickets to fly between Peru and the United States, boarding on both companies. Both companies introduced their codeshare in June.

JetSMART Peru operates flights to and from Iquitos (IQT), Tarapoto (TPP), Piura (PIU), Chiclayo (CIX), Cajamarca (CJA), Trujillo (TRU), Lima (LIM), Cuzco (CUZ), and Arequipa (AQP).

Estuardo Ortiz, Chief Executive Officer of JetSMART, said,

“Today, we take another step in our revolution by making history with the launch of an alliance between JetSMART and American Airlines, creating new opportunities for travel between Peru and the United States.”

The South American ultra-low-cost carrier expects to increase its partnership with American Airlines even further in the future with the addition of routes to Argentina and Colombia. This alliance represents a new era of possibilities for travelers, said JetSMART.

Joining AAdvantage

Perhaps the most exciting piece of news for some travelers is that JetSMART is looking to join American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty program.

In a statement, JetSMART announced it “intends to join the prestigious AAdvantage loyalty program of American Airlines. This means that passengers will be able to accumulate miles and redeem rewards on domestic and international flights, gaining access to one of the most recognized and advantageous travel loyalty programs in the Americas.”

Unfortunately, JetSMART did not provide a date when passengers will be able to accumulate AAdvantage miles. Simple Flying reached American Airlines for comment on a date. The US carrier has yet to respond; we will update when it does.

American Airlines' loyalty program rewards frequent flyers for their travel with the company. They can access 350 destinations in 50 countries served by American. But if we take into account the company’s partners, then a passenger can select over 1,000 destinations in 150 countries.

The AAdvantage program is an incredibly profitable cash cow for the US carrier. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it generated about $2.9 billion each year.
