Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture, and it is an important day for Mexicans and Mexican Americans alike. This holiday is widely celebrated in some parts of Mexico and the United States, and airlines have taken notice of the festivities over the years. Just as airlines recently celebrated Easter, they also commemorate Cinco de Mayo in unique ways.

American Airlines

In promoting cultural diversity, American Airlines has a staff group called the Latin Diversity Network (LDN). What started as an Employee Business Resource Group comprised a small number of Latin and Hispanic employees at the airline and has now grown into an extensive support network focusing on career development, volunteering, and cultural awareness.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo in 2020, American Airlines’ LDN organized a series of celebrations within the organization, as well as at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Staff and passengers alike were treated to traditional music, dances, and a whole lot of colorful culture.

Alaska Airlines

In 2021, Alaska Airlines celebrated Cinco de Mayo with live music and themed cocktails at its Alaska Lounges. Guests were offered a choice of the ‘Berry Festive Margarita,’ ‘Margarita Dorada,’ or ‘Let’s Man-GO Margarita’ custom cocktails while being entertained by a band clad in traditional attire. All these, plus a full view of the airline’s aircraft taxiing in the background – what a treat!

Alaska Airlines understood that while not everyone could be there to enjoy the festivities, they left no one out with their Cinco de Mayo social media posts, which included a quiz to learn more about the celebration’s historical significance.

Aeromexico

As the aviation industry is known for being innovative, Mexican flag carrier Aeromexico manages to stay ahead of the curve (such as by being the world’s fourth-largest operator of the Boeing 737 MAX) while staying close to its roots. The airline has been known to incorporate Mexican culture and traditions into its identity – like having a Mariachi band at the recent launch of its Mexico City-Rome route.

So, if there’s one airline that celebrates Cinco de Mayo well, it’s got to be Aeromexico. This year, the airline is offering discounted flight tickets between Mexico and the US, where Cinco de Mayo is most celebrated.
