Mexican flag carrier Aeromexico has made some changes to its domestic schedule, permanently removing flights between Monterrey International Airport (MTY) and Guadalajara International (GDL) for the remainder of the year, Cirium data shows. On Monday, Aeromexico also announced it was of the top 3 most fuel-efficient airlines globally after receiving 20 Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner jets in 2022.

Scheduling changes

In March, Aeromexico stopped flying the route between Monterrey and Guadalajara, two of the three largest cities in the country. Without citing any reason, the legacy carrier left the market in which it offered about 74 weekly flights.

Nonetheless, Aeromexico’s presence on this route was half of what Viva Aerobus and Volaris, two ultra-low-cost carriers, offered. As of June 2023, Viva Aerobus flies 150 monthly services between these two cities and Volaris 120 monthly flights. They offer 110,676 seats.

This week, Aeromexico permanently scrapped the flights between Monterrey and Guadalajara for the next year, according to data from Cirium. This points out to Aeromexico leaving the city-to-city pair to the two ultra-low-cost carriers. Aeromexico’s strength has been operating from Mexico City and Felipe Angeles International Airport (MEX and NLU). However, note that schedules are subject to change, and the carrier could reinstate them in the future.

Aeromexico - a fuel-efficient airline

Through fleet investment, Aeromexico positioned in the top 3 of the most fuel-efficient airlines in the world, according to a report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airline reported on Monday.

Last year, the airline received 20 new aircraft (12 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, seven MAX 9s, and one 787-9). This expanded the fleet to 154 aircraft, including five 737-700s, 36 737-800s, 33 MAX 8s, 18 MAX 9s, and 29 E190s for short and medium-haul operations. The airline also operates eight 787-8s and 12 787-9s for long-haul services to destinations in South America, Europe, and Asia. This is the largest fleet Aeromexico has operated in its almost 90 years of history.

Through the arrival of these new planes, the airline was 40% more efficient than in previous years, reducing its carbon footprint per seat-kilometer between 20% and 40% in comparison to other similar-sized airlines. The average age of Aeromexico’s fleet is 7.97 years. Between 2020 and 2022, the percentage of the airline’s planes aged seven years or younger increased from 37% to 41%.

Aeromexico’s CEO is SkyTeam’s new chairman

This week, the global airline alliance SkyTeam announced changes in its management. One of these changes included the appointment of a new chairman: Andrés Conesa, Aeromexico’s CEO. The Mexican carrier is a founding member of SkyTeam, which includes other companies such as Aerolíneas Argentinas, Air Europa, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, ITA Airways, and more. After receiving the news, Andrés Conesa said,

“I am honored to take on this new challenge. As a founding airline, Aeromexico is proud of SkyTeam's growth over its 23-year history. Our industry shares a common goal, and we must do our part to adhere and implement best practices to bring the SkyTeam alliance to new heights, always customer-centric, technology-driven, and with a sustainable mindset.”
